2009 Polaris Prize short list
July 7th, 2009 at 10.17am (Awards, News)
It’s here!
Chad VanGaalen – Soft Airplane
Elliott Brood – Mountain Meadows
Fucked Up – Chemistry of Common Life
Great Lake Swimmers – Lost Channels
Hey Rosetta! – Into Your Lungs
Joel Plaskett – Three
K’Naan – Troubador
Malajube – Labyrinths
Metric – Fantasies
Patrick Watson – Wooden Arms
I’m so excited about Elliott Brood. So excited. I don’t think Patrick Watson will take it, just because he’s already won and the Prize is so new; it’s pretty exciting to see Chad VanGaalen and Joel Plaskett on that list, though. The winner will be announced September 21!

My heart is ripped right in two between Chad VanGaalen and Elliott Brood – both made such outstanding albums. Oh and Great Lake Swimmers has torn off quite a bit of my heart as well, leaving me essentially heartless.

I like that Fucked Up made it to the short list. Though I think they are more or less a long shot, judging by all the past winners.
If Patrick Watson won again I’m sure there would be some discontent. I think Elliott Brood would be great to win. They sound so much like Canadiana and I think that would be a fitting choice to win, though Joel Plaskett has been on quite the tear lately. I haven’t heard a few of the albums. I’m rooting for Joel, but have a feeling he won’t get it.

Although Barbara does make a fine point, all of those artists would make worthy winners… But after careful analysis I think this might just be Malajube’s year.
I kinda love the fact too that people are actually excited for Canadian music because of this. That is always a good thing!
