Blah, blah, blah

Oh hey internet. About that whole idea of “doing interesting stuff” in order to “blog about it later”? Not much of that has been going on lately. Soon, however, there will be a mammoth post-marathon recap: I am currently watching all the movies made by this guy (up 132% in popularity this week? probably all my fault). I’ll hit the halfway mark tonight, and boy howdy am I ever starting to feel it.
I’ll tell you right now that Australia stinks and Deception was actually OK. I’ve only seen two movies with Michelle Williams, counting the latter, but she was quite terrific in Brokeback Mountain and I am interested to see some more of her work.
I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, but in case you haven’t, frontman Steven Page has left the Barenaked Ladies. Read the story. Bizarrely, Paul McCartney was recently quoted as saying that BNL “sing much better” than the Fab Four, and that he would consider recording with them. Now’s your chance, Macca!
Also, in case you missed the boat the first two times, the Weakerthans have added a third show here in Toronto at the Phoenix Concert Theatre on April 2, following the selling-out of the shows on March 31 and April 1. They will be joined by The Constantines and The Waking Eyes; tickets are $25 advance.
Somewhat relatedly, Sloan have beefed up their CMW roster and added another band for both of their nights at the Mod Club Theatre, March 11 and 12. Joining them for the first night will be Zeus, while the second night will kick off with Hexes & Ohs. Both nights also sport a set by Murderecords fellows Will Currie & The Country French.
That’s all I have! Come back tomorrow for a new Tunesday track. I’ll also have a review of Watchmen here on Friday; tickets for the midnight showing are sitting right next to me. Awwww, yeah.

Michelle Williams has been in a bunch of quality indie movies, so if you can get a hand on her stuff, it’s probably worth seeing. “Wendy and Lucy” is a recent one that people were saying she deserved an Oscar for.

Ooh. See. I would say that Deception was one of the worst things I’ve ever paid to see… but that Australia was silly and sprawling but Baztacular…:S

WOW! Macca said that about the ladies? High praise doesn’t get much better than that now does it?
And a third TO show for the Rolling Tundra review? I’m very impressed. I don’t think the show is even sold out here in London yet… Ack. Looking very, very much forward to seeing $100 that night.
Splendid post Ruh, just chock full of newsworthy goodness!

I wish the Weakerthans/Constantines had gotten better openers for the Toronto shows. Waking Eyes? Seriously? Seriously? What a let-down… I can tell they had nothing to do with that decision.

Thanks, Gareth — I’ll check that out for sure. I’m really interested in seeing more of her stuff.
Rox, maybe Baz Luhrmann just doesn’t do it for me. I wouldn’t say that Australia was the worst movie ever, because let’s face it — it’s not. There are parts in it I liked, but there are far more parts in it that I didn’t like. The thing about Deception was that even though the storyline was super predictable and not innovative, I really liked the production, which struck me as somewhat different from most movies of its genre. There was no spy/adrenaline business, just this weird downcast sort of mood the entire time. I liked that (the music and particular types of shots).
Not a movie I’d watch again, though, I’ll certainly give you that one. Haha. I’ll talk about them all more shortly though.
Sean, $100 are playing with them in London?! I am super, super jealous. They are most excellent and I am sure you’ll have a great time! I expect a long and detailed review.

Nice one Colin, you posted as I was writing that reply. I had no idea I was so popular. Anyway … I thought the Waking Eyes were well-liked! I really don’t know them at all but I certainly hear about them a lot.

You know what I liked about Deception? How MASSIVE Hugh Jackman’s hands are.

Hahaha! I hadn’t noticed.

I’m not even sure if I have seen all that many Hugh Jackman movies to tell you the truth. Obviously something has been amiss in my education.
I am really looking forward to the Weakerthans/Cons show here, although it is only for one night. I sure hope the Waking Eyes join them here as well.

Oh trust me … you only need to see four. The X-Men trilogy and the aforementioned The Prestige. That’s it. The others aren’t worth it. I haven’t seen them all yet, but I am pretty sure none of them will hold a candle to those anyway. hahaha
